The elementary magnet schools are intended to manage student enrollment, integration and to provide educational choices for families.
Admission to the elementary magnet schools is by a controlled lottery. Students are selected based upon their lottery number and group membership according to the following order:
- Students residing on streets assigned to the magnet school.
- Students with a sibling who will be attendance in the magnet school.
- Students residing on streets with preferred admission status to the magnet school.
- Students assigned to non magnet schools that may be targeted for admission to the magnet schools.
- All other students.
In selected instances, admission to a magnet school may not be offered according to lottery to students coming from particular elementary schools if admission of these students would affect the integration standard of the sending schools. To achieve balance in the elementary schools, the lottery creates both Educationally Disadvantaged and Educationally Non-Disadvantaged lists at each grade level.
Orientation meetings are held monthly. Parents are strongly urged to attend the orientation meetings to learn about the magnet schools in which they are interested.
Lottery applications for the elementary magnet schools for 2008-2009 should be submitted to the offices of Hart, Rogers, Toquam, and Westover, as appropriate. It is encouraged that applications are hand delivered, not mailed, to ensure safe delivery. The deadline for submitting applications is 4:00 P.M. on Monday, March 3, 2008. Late applications will not be entered in the lottery. These applications will be time stamped and considered only after the lottery list is exhausted.
Letters will be mailed home to parents regularly to indicate receipt of lottery applications. If you have applied to a magnet school and do not receive a letter of receipt within six weeks of submitting your application, please call the Research Office at 977-4198.
