The Alternate Routes to Success program currently operates three alternative community-learning centers and the more traditional homebound / hospital tutorial instruction program. The programs are as follows:

  1. Yerwood Center This program currently serves 35-40 students all of whom have experienced significant school failure due to mental health issues such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and school phobia. These problems have manifested themselves in truancy, repeated failing of classes and the like. There are currently 4 general education teachers, 1 special education teacher, 2 tutors, and an an itinerant social worker educational assistant.
  2. Saint Andrew’s Center This program currently serves 25-30 students who have had repeated school difficulties, including discipline problems, academic failure, repeated suspension, expulsion, and court involvement. There are currently 3 general education teachers, 1 special education teacher, 1 tutor, a student advocate and an itinerant social worker.
  3. Government Center : This program currently serves 25-30 students. Students in this program all have had significant discipline problems including school failure, repeated suspension, expulsions, and truancy. There are 5 general education teachers, 1 special education teacher, 2 student supervisors (security), an itinerant social worker and 1 educational assistant. Stamford Public Schools has partnered with the DOMUS Foundation to provide 4 family advocates. The family advocates provide social services and family out-reach to assist students and their families overcome obstacles to their academic.
  4. One on One Home / Hospital Instruction: Currently students are seen one-on-one either because they are ill or because their behavior makes it prohibitive for them to be in a group at this time. Tutors and teachers see students during the day and/or after school.

The nature of the programming needs for students in these programs differ significantly. This will require that they be housed in different locations. If you should have any questions, please contact me at 977 4521 or Mike Meyer at 977 5620.
