T

he Extended-Day Math/Science Enrichment Program 2008 is a nine-week program that focuses on the integration of math, science, and technology through project-based learning for students in Grades 5 and 8. Grade 5 students who scored in the 95th percentile and above on the spring 2007 CMT in math and Grade 8 students who scored in the 95th percentile and above on the spring 2007 CMT in math and the Orleans Hanna qualified for this program. This year’s program was held at Turn of River Middle School. Students in the program met one day per week on Tuesdays for two hours from January 8th through March 18th.

Grade 5 Instructional Focus: Through building a bridge for the 21st Century, students worked in teams to develop, expand, and apply their knowledge, skills, and understanding of numerous math and science skills including, but not limited to, measurement, geometry, patterns, symmetry, metric measurement, and design of structures. The hands-on activities integrated science with math and technology and were designed to encourage creative and divergent thinking. The culminating activity was students’ participation in the “21st Century Bridge Fair” where they were given an opportunity to showcase their learning.

Grade 8 Instructional Focus: Through building an ecologically-friendly house for the 21st Century, students worked in teams to develop, expand, and apply their knowledge, skills, and understanding of numerous math and science concepts and skills including, but not limited to, measurement, scale, number sense, formulas, slope, current environmental issues and energy. The hands-on activities integrated science with math and technology and were designed to encourage creative and divergent thinking. The culminating activity was students’ participation in the “21st Century Eco-Friendly House Fair” where students were given an opportunity to showcase their learning.
